This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS was purchased new by the seller’s father at the 1970 Portland Auto Show as a present for the seller’s brother, from whom the seller purchased it 17 years later as an 18th birthday gift for his own son. The car was reacquired in 1992 and stored for 10 years before a two-year overhaul entailing a color change to black and rebuilds of its 454ci LS5 V8, three-speed automatic transmission, and rear end. Factory options include the Z15 SS Equipment Package, F41 Special Performance Suspension, and power-assisted front disc brakes. The car was awarded first in class at the 2004 Portland Roadster Show before the end of the refurbishment, and less than 2k miles have been driven since completion. Service in 2019 included a brake booster rebuild and installation of a new master cylinder. This Chevelle is offered with its original build sheet, restoration invoices, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.
The Fisher body was originally finished in Metallic Rosewood with black stripes and featured a black vinyl top, though it was later repainted three times in two-tone bronze and cream, blue, and dark red respectively. The seller had the car refinished in its current black with burgundy stripes following body repairs performed between 2003 and 2004 by Finn’s Auto Restoration in Woodburn, Oregon. Invoices in the gallery detail the work and expenses involved. The cowl induction hood features hold-down pins and was refinished in 2019.
A video tour is provided above. Black-painted 15″ SS wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires made in 2002. Power-assisted brakes feature discs up front, and the master cylinder was replaced and the booster reconditioned in 2019. Additional factory options include power-assisted steering and F41 Special Performance suspension.
The interior was retrimmed by Rabe’s Auto Upholstery of Woodburn, Oregon with black seat covers and door panels as well as a matching headliner and carpets. Front bucket seats are equipped with headrests and split by a center console with a horseshoe shifter. A Clarion CD player has replaced the factory radio.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a clock, and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline. Approximately 42k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, which is said to have rolled over once. Just under 2k miles have reportedly been driven since completion in 2005, and total mileage is believed to be 142k.
The 454ci LS5 Turbo-Jet V8 was rebuilt by Craig’s Automotive of Portland, Oregon in 2003 and is shown running in the cold start video above. Domed pistons were fitted along with new bearings and ARP connecting rod bolts. The cylinder heads were magnafluxed, the crankshaft polished, the cylinders honed, and the compression ratio set to 9.375:1. A 750-cfm carburetor was added and new wiring harnesses were installed.
Power is sent through a rebuilt Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission with a 2,000-rpm stall converter, and the car was equipped with 3.31:1 differential from the factory.
The original build sheet lists the factory finishes and options.
Over a dozen pages of invoices in the gallery detail the 2000s work as well as service performed in 2019. Two driving videos are provided below.
