This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu is an orange-over-black sport coupe that was modified under previous ownership with installation of a replacement 454ci V8, and it was acquired by the seller in 2020. Subsequent work reportedly involved an exterior repaint along with an overhaul of its 12-bolt rear axle and Positraction differential. The car is also equipped with a Muncie four-speed manual transmission, a cowl-induction hood, a black vinyl roof, black-finished 15″ SS rally-style wheels, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, a Hurst shifter, a Sparkomatic cassette stereo, an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold, and a Flowmaster dual exhaust system. This Chevelle coupe is now offered with a transferable New York registration document in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory finished in Burnt Orange (62) and is said to have been repainted with black stripes under current ownership. Exterior features include a cowl-induction hood with a flapper and hood pins in addition to a black vinyl roof, a driver’s sport mirror, “SS” and “454” badging, and chrome bumpers. Wear is visible on the vinyl roof, and the seller notes paint chips and scratches.
Black-finished 15” SS rally-style wheels with bowtie center caps and chrome trim rings wear 215/65 front and 255/60 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The power brake booster was reportedly replaced in 2023.
The front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in black vinyl and accompanied by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include a Hurst Competition/Plus shifter, a center console, a heater, and a Sparkomatic AM/FM cassette stereo linked to aftermarket speakers. Cracks are visible in the upper portion of the dash pad.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline as well as auxiliary gauges for voltage, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 53k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership. The clock works intermittently, and total mileage is unknown.
The 454ci V8 crate engine was installed under previous ownership and is equipped with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and aluminum intake manifold as well as Hooker exhaust headers. Work performed in 2023 reportedly included an oil change along with replacement of the distributor cap, rotor, and ignition points.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with a Positraction differential and 4.11:1 gears. The car is equipped with a Flowmaster American Thunder crossmember-back dual exhaust system. The rear axle was reportedly overhauled in 2022.
