This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 has been with the seller since 1996 and has recently completed a thorough rolling restoration. The factory build sheet confirms that this is a genuine Z/28 built in Van Nuys, California, though the engine is believed to be a factory replacement based on the engine number. Featuring a factory Muncie 4-speed and Posi-traction rear end, it has been restored over the years with rebuilt mechanicals, refurbished cosmetics and a few subtle reliability and performance mods. The seller describes it as good-looking, nice-sounding and very nice to drive.
Eight years ago the car was completely stripped and treated to new rear quarter panels before receiving a respray in orange with black stripes and vinyl top, the front left quarter panel having been replaced previously by a different owner. Now entirely rust-free and very straight, thorough prep and finish is documented with dozens of photos in the gallery linked below. Torq Thrust D’s always look nice on a first gen Camaro, and orange is easily one of the model’s best factory colors.
According to a build sheet found on top of the gas tank, the interior is the only place where restoration work has deviated from stock in a noticeable way. Black carpet, dash and upholstery are all correct, though door panels and seats were originally white when the car rolled off the assembly line nearly 50 years ago. We agree with the seller that all black makes for a cleaner look, and after six years all materials seem to be holding up nicely. Note the cool center console gauges and eight-track from a ’70 Camaro.
The car runs a correct DZ stamped 302 with original double hump heads, intake, and single carb. The seller notes it was likely a dealer replacement in the early seventies, citing the fact that the engine is dated after the production date of the car. Warmed over with a .065 overbore and a performance grind solid cam, crank, rockers, valves and other internals are largely stock excluding custom-made pistons and hardened valve seats, the latter which allow the use of unleaded gas. The car’s M20 4-speed has also been rebuilt along with its original, 3.73 geared Posi-traction rear end. Other spec details include manual steering and power front discs/rear drums, while suspension runs new Bilstein shocks, leaf springs, upgraded front sway bar, and poly bushings.
The seller says that remaining fixes needed are a new fuel sending unit, a front end alignment (off since ride height was corrected recently) and a horn button contact spring. The ammeter isn’t currently working due to incompatibility with aftermarket HEI ignition, though should function with the included factory distributor. Documentation includes a factory build sheet, detailed title history, and more than 20 years of receipts. A spares package includes the original steel wheels and trim rings, rear bumperettes, original distributor, original harmonic balancer, and other miscellaneous items the seller has accumulated over the years.
