This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 was acquired by the seller in 2007 and subsequent work consisted of rebuilding the engine and transmission, reportedly installing a replacement clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, bench seat, headliner, and carpets, and repainting the dashboard and hood. The car is finished in red over red vinyl upholstery and powered by a 396ci V8 paired with a replacement Muncie four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a Hurst shifter, a tachometer, power brakes, 14″ steel wheels with mag-style covers, a black tail panel and grille, and a dual exhaust system. This Chevelle SS is offered with awards and a clean Missouri title in the seller’s name.
The car is finished in red and is said to have been repainted during previous ownership. Features include a blacked-out grille, a hood with faux twin scoops, SS396 emblems on the grille and rear cove, Super Sport script on the rear quarter panels, quad headlamps, reverse lamps, and a dual-outlet exhaust that exits behind the rear wheels. The hood pins were removed during current ownership.
The 14″ steel wheels wear mag-style covers and are mounted with Firestone Sup-R-Belt redline tires. A full-size spare is mounted in the trunk. Braking is handled by power-assisted drums at all four corners.
The cabin features front and rear bench seats reupholstered in red vinyl joined by a color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. Equipment includes a Hurst shifter, a heater and defroster, polished sill plates, and rubber floor mats. Work during current ownership is said to have consisted of replacing the headliner and carpet, repainting the dashboard, and installing front and rear bench seats. The AM radio does not work.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a sweeping 120-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, battery voltage, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. A tachometer is mounted below the dashboard. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 16k miles, approximately 4k were added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 396ci V8 was rebuilt in 2009 by Cameron Engines and breathes through a four-barrel carburetor. Features include a DeWitts HD radiator, a sealed AGM battery with a production-appearing cover, an orange engine block, and intake manifold as well as a chrome air cleaner lid and valve covers. The radiator was reportedly installed in 2014 and an oil change was performed in 2022.
The engine code and serial number are shown above.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a replacement Muncie four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle. The transmission is said to have been rebuilt and the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate were reportedly replaced during current ownership. The rear axle front seal leaks after sitting.
