Restored and Revved Up: 1969 Chevrolet Nova Drag Car

Overview

This 1969 Chevrolet Nova coupe, transformed into a Pro Street drag car in 2020 by the son of the original owner, boasts a 396ci V8 engine with a Weiand supercharger and a FiTech 2×4 fuel injection system. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a modified TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 9″ rear end featuring a limited-slip differential, Strange axles, and 4.11:1 gears. The car, finished in blue and silver, rides on a modified suspension with tubular control arms, QA1 shocks, Hotchkis subframe connectors, and traction bars. It also features 15″ drag wheels with Mickey Thompson tires and four-wheel disc brakes. The cabin includes a roll cage, two racing buckets with safety harnesses, AutoMeter instrumentation, an aftermarket switch panel, and a B&M shifter. This Pro Street-style Nova coupe is offered by the selling dealer with a clean Montana title.

Exterior

Repainted in its current metallic blue and silver scheme during refurbishment, the car features a lift-off hood, SS-style grille and taillight panel, chrome bumpers, tinted windows, and red pinstriping around the silver stripe. Polished five-spoke wheels with Mickey Thompson drag tires and rear beadlock rings enhance its appearance. The suspension includes traction bars, QA1 shocks, a tubular crossmember with a driveshaft safety loop, Hotchkis subframe connectors, and tubular front control arms. Braking is managed by power-assisted four-wheel discs with Wilwood front calipers.

Interior

The interior features racing bucket seats covered in black cloth with five-point safety harnesses. A modified rear bulkhead replaces the rear bench, and a roll cage is installed for added safety. A Painless Performance switch and fuse panel is located ahead of the B&M shifter, and AutoMeter Ultra-Lite II gauges are mounted to the front roll bar. The five-digit odometer shows 64k miles, though the total mileage is unknown.

Modifications

The underbody fuel tank has been replaced with a fuel cell in the trunk, which also houses a battery and a cutoff switch mounted in place of the right reverse light. The 396ci V8 engine features a Weiand Pro Street supercharger, a FiTech 2×4 fuel injection system, and a three-butterfly intake scoop. Cooling is provided by an aluminum radiator with dual electric fans, while long-tube headers feed into an H-pipe mid-section and Flowmaster mufflers that exit ahead of the rear axle.

Transmission

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission, which includes a 3,500-rpm stall-speed torque converter. The 9″ rear end is equipped with a limited-slip differential, Strange Engineering axles, and 4.11:1 gears.

This 1969 Chevrolet Nova coupe is a meticulously modified Pro Street drag car, blending performance and style, and is now available with a clean Montana title.
