This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a factory big-block example that was acquired by its current owner approximately 12 years ago. A rebuild of its 396ci V8 followed in 2009 along with installation of a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission, an aftermarket air conditioning system, and other mechanical updates. Recent work included replacement of a variety of interior trim as well as an A/C recharge. This white on black Chevelle is offered by the selling dealer on behalf of its owner with recent service records and a clean Texas title.
The car was repainted in its current white with wraparound red stripes by a previous owner, and the selling dealer notes that evidence of filler is present along with corrosion on various body panels. Detailed photos of exterior imperfections can be seen in the gallery below.
The roof wears a black vinyl cover, with some wear and small holes visible in photos. Black and polished 14″ Magnum 500-style wheels wear SS center caps and are currently mounted with a set of BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires.
The interior is trimmed in black vinyl and wear is visible on the outer bolster of the driver’s seat. Multiple interior trim pieces have been replaced during the owner’s time with the car, including new door handles, window trim, A-pillar covers, and more as indicated on the included records.
The factory AM radio is present but has been bypassed in favor of a modern Kenwood unit mounted to the bottom of the dash. An aftermarket air conditioning system was installed in 2009 and is said to work well after a recent recharge by the seller. The odometer currently shows just under 5k miles, with true mileage unknown. The fuel gauge is inoperative per the seller.
Power comes from a 396ci big-block V8 that was bored, honed, and rebuilt in 2009 with new pistons, rod bearings, rings, valves, and more as detailed in the records below. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that was installed at the time of the rebuild. The factory transmission has been retained by the current owner and is available.
The factory data tag can be seen above and denotes that the car was manufactured in the first week of April 1968 in Baltimore, Maryland and has the correct “13837” number to identify it as an SS396. A photo of the worn engine number pad is provided in the gallery below and thought to match the car’s identification number.
A new pinion seal was installed during the transmission swap, with receipts for the work provided below. Multiple undercarriage photos have been provided by the seller.
Records from the current owner are included in the sale along with three period service manuals. Two videos of the car can be seen below.
