This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 was produced in Kansas City, Missouri, and it underwent a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment prior to the seller’s purchase in 2012. The exterior has been refinished in Tuxedo Black, the interior was retrimmed in red, and a replacement 396ci V8 was rebuilt and installed. Features include a rebuilt Muncie four-speed manual transmission, a rebuilt 12-bolt rear end, power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, a remote trunk release, a Delco AM radio, and bucket seats. This Chevelle is now offered with owner’s books, service manuals, jacking equipment, and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.

This SS was originally finished in Cameo Beige, and it was repainted in the current Tuxedo Black color during prior ownership according to the seller, who notes the frame was refinished separately at that time. SS-specific cosmetics include a blacked-out grille, a unique SS396 hood with faux twin scoops, 396 badging on the front fenders, SS396 emblems on the grille and rear cove, Super Sport script on the rear quarter panels, and ribbed rocker-panel moldings. A complete set of T3-style headlights have been installed in preparation for the sale.

Rally 15″ wheels wear bowtie-logo center caps and polished trim rings and are mounted with Firestone redline tires. A 14″ spare is located in the trunk. Power-assisted disc brakes are fitted up front, and the car is also equipped with power steering.

The cabin was trimmed in black from the factory and was subsequently reupholstered in red vinyl while under previous ownership. The front passenger bucket seat features reclining adjustability, and the center console houses a clock positioned ahead of the shifter. Additional features include a Delco AM radio, a heater, and a powered trunk release.

Instrumentation includes a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a pair of Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges mounted under the dash. The five-digit odometer reads 96k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 396ci V8 is said to have been rebuilt during the refurbishment and is equipped with aluminum cylinder heads. The block is finished in orange and topped with a Winters aluminum intake manifold as well as chrome treatments for the air cleaner housing and valve covers. The seller notes the engine’s cylinder head mounting surfaces were machined during the rebuild, resulting in a blank engine pad. A collection of stampings and casting numbers are displayed in the gallery below, including casting number 3855962, which indicates a 396ci big block with four-bolt main caps built in 1965 or 1966.
