This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS 396 coupe was built at GM’s Atlanta, Georgia assembly plant and delivered new to Powers-Swain Chevrolet in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It underwent a refurbishment circa 2016 before being acquired by the selling dealer one year ago. The car is finished in Autumn Gold with black stripes over gold vinyl and is powered by a 402ci Turbo Jet L34 V8 mated to an M20 four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt PosiTraction axle with 3.31:1 gears. Additional equipment includes SS-style 14″ wheels, power-assisted front disc brakes, a black vinyl roof covering, a Hurst shifter, and a Delco push-button radio. A fluid service was performed in February 2023. This Chevelle Malibu SS is now offered by the selling dealer in California with a build sheet and a clean Texas title.
Finished from the factory in Autumn Gold (58) with black stripes, the body was repainted under previous ownership. Details include a black vinyl roof covering, “SS” badging, a black rear bumper insert, bright trim, and dual polished exhaust outlets.
Super Sport-style 14″ wheels are mounted with Goodyear Polyglas tires, and a spare is mounted in the trunk. Factory equipment includes the F41 Special Performance Suspension, and stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes.
The cabin features bench seats trimmed in gold vinyl upholstery with a matching dashboard and door panels. Equipment includes a Hurst shifter, a heater and defroster, hand-crank side windows, and a Delco push-button radio.
The SS-branded steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for amperage, temperature, and fuel level. A Sunpro oil pressure readout is mounted below the dashboard. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 90k miles, and the total mileage is unknown.
The 402ci L34 V8 was marketed as a 396 in 1970 and features a four-barrel carburetor. The engine is said to have been overhauled in 2016, and an oil change was carried out in February 2023.
The engine block stamping is displayed above.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt PosiTraction axle with 3.31:1 gears.
