This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS 396 sport coupe was built at GM’s Fremont, California, assembly plant and first registered in Van Nuys, California. It is refinished in yellow over black vinyl upholstery and powered by a 396ci V8 mated with a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with 3.08:1 gears. Equipment includes a black vinyl roof covering, 14″ Rally wheels, power-assisted front disc brakes, power steering, chrome bumpers, air conditioning, and a Delco AM radio. The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment before being acquired by the seller in 2021. This Malibu SS 396 is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a sales contract, owner’s manuals, a Protect-O-Plate, and a clean Arizona title.
Finished from the factory in Butternut Yellow (Y), the body was said to be repainted under previous ownership. Equipment includes a black vinyl roof covering, chrome bumpers and wheel arch trim, a black pinstripe, SS 396 badging, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 14″ Rally wheels are wrapped in 255/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. Factory equipment includes power steering, and stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes.
The cabin features bench seats trimmed in black vinyl upholstery along with a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes lap belts, air conditioning, a heater and defroster, hand-crank side windows, black floor mats, and a Delco AM push-button radio.
The SS-branded three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for amperage, oil, temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 43k miles, approximately 1k of which were added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 396ci V8 was factory rated at 325 horsepower when new. Equipment includes a four-barrel carburetor, a polished air cleaner cover and valve covers, and a dual exhaust system.
The engine code and serial number are shown above. The ET suffix corresponds with a 325-horsepower 396ci V8 installed in a 1968 Chevelle with a TH400 automatic transmission.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission and a 12-bolt axle with 3.08:1 gears. Records indicate the transmission was resealed in May 2020. Additional photos of the underside are provided in the image gallery.
