This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu is a refurbished example that is powered by a 396ci V8 backed by a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission. The car was purchased by the seller in December 2004 and has since received over $14k of work including an engine rebuild, 3.73 posi rear end, new shocks, front disc brakes, Cragar wheels, a repaint, and more. Since the big block was rebuilt in 2007, it has been driven sparingly. An additional set of bumpers, the original hood and springs, a complete console kit, replacement dash switches, and other miscellaneous parts are included, and the car is sold with a clean Virginia title in the seller’s name.
Repainted in August 2005, the car was fitted with Cragar 390 chrome wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A rubber. Body panels are all believed to be original except for the hood that was replaced with a 1969 big block item to resolve some waviness. Small patch panels were added during the repaint.
The brightwork is complete, though the seller notes that exterior chrome could use polishing or replacement. The bumpers show some chrome loss, and an additional pair of front and rear units will be included.
Black vinyl seats are period correct but not original, and an aftermarket console has been added between them. A small tear is noticeable on the driver’s seat, and door panels that were replaced in 2005 appear to remain clean. The headliner is torn and sagging as detailed in the gallery.
Autometer Sport Comp gauges and Covan Classic inserts have replaced factory instrument panel. According to the seller, the fan controls need to be adjusted and various interior switches will be included. No stereo is installed. The new odometer shows 1,250 miles, but true mileage is unknown.
The current 396 big block and Turbo 350 transmission with a B&M shift kit were already installed when the seller acquired the car. The engine was bored .30 over during the 2007 rebuild and fitted with Headman ceramic coated headers. Records are available for the rebuild and all work completed during the seller’s ownership, which included:
- PST polygraphite super kit with sway bar bushings
- Prothane motor and trans mounts from OPG
- Front end rebuild
- Deluxe disc brake front conversion kit from OPG
- Rear sway bar kit from OPG
- New steering box
- New rear springs and boxed rear lower control arms
- New front disc brake lines
- New radiator support
- New starter
- Complete new ring and pinion, bearings, seal, U-joint, and shocks
- New engine harness, front light harness, and big block front coil springs
The rear end was rebuilt with an Eaton 3.73 posi added in April 2006. A Flowmaster exhaust with H-pipe was also fitted. Some fluid leaks are noted, and the undercarriage is further documented with several photos in the gallery. A video of the car running is viewable below.
