This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS 396 sport coupe was purchased new from Smith Chevrolet of Turlock, California, and it was relocated to Iowa in 1990 and subsequently refurbished. Finished in green with white stripes and a green vinyl roof over green vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 402ci V8 paired with a replacement three-speed automatic transmission. Other equipment includes SS 14″ wheels, power-assisted front disc brakes, power steering, a black grille, a Sun tachometer, air conditioning, an AM radio, and bench seating. The selling dealer acquired the car in October 2023 from a person who had owned the car since 1991, and subsequent work is said to have involved replacing the fuel tank, the intake manifold, and the valve-cover gaskets. Now showing 58k miles, this Chevelle SS 396 is offered at no reserve with a Protect-O-Plate, build sheets, an owner’s manual, service records dating back to the 1990s, refurbishment photos, and a clean Iowa title.
The car was finished from the factory in Forest Green (48), and it was stripped and refinished around 1990. Features include white stripes, a green vinyl roof, a black grille, a driver-side mirror, a domed hood, hideaway windshield wipers, and chrome bumpers.
Super Sport 14″ wheels are mounted with 225/70 Goodyear Eagle ST tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
The front and rear bench seats are upholstered in green vinyl, and the interior is also appointed with air conditioning and a Delco AM radio.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a fuel-level gauge, a clock, and warning lights. A Sun tachometer is attached to the A-pillar. The five-digit odometer shows 58k miles, approximately 20 of which were added by the selling dealer.
The Turbo-Jet 402ci L34 V8 was factory rated at 350 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The selling dealer had the intake manifold, the valve-cover gaskets, and the fuel tank replaced in preparation for the sale. Stampings on the engine are pictured in the gallery below.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission, which is said to have been replaced under warranty in 1972. The rear end bears a “CCW” stamp and carries 3.31:1 gearing.
