This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 coupe was initially delivered to Tuttle Chevrolet of Madison, North Carolina, and it underwent a refurbishment in the 1990s that included repainting the body, re-trimming the interior, and rebuilding the engine. Power is provided by a 402ci L34 V8 linked to a three-speed automatic transmission, and the car is finished in gold over a reupholstered black vinyl interior. Equipment includes a black vinyl roof covering, 14″ wheels, power-assisted steering, front disc brakes, a dual exhaust system, front bucket seats, rear lap belts, air conditioning, a center console, and a push-button radio. This Chevelle SS was acquired by the seller in 2022 and is now offered with build sheets, a refurbishment photo album, and an Illinois title in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory in Champagne Gold (55) and was refinished in 1990. Exterior details include a black vinyl roof covering, a domed hood, SS and 396 badging, a single bright-finished mirror, chrome bumpers, and dual polished exhaust outlets.
The 14″ Super Sport wheels wear bright trim rings and are mounted with Firestone Wide Oval raised-white-letter tires, and a matching spare is stored in the trunk. Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes. The car is equipped with power-assisted steering and was ordered with the F41 performance suspension package featuring a thicker front sway bar, a rear sway bar, and boxed front control arms.
The cabin houses front bucket seats and a rear bench that were reupholstered in black vinyl joined by a color-coordinated dashboard and replacement carpeting and door panels. Equipment includes a locking center console, air conditioning, a push-button radio, front shoulder belts, front and rear lap belts, and manual crank windows. There is a crack in the upholstery of the rear passenger-side armrest.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a central 120-mph speedometer, a fuel-level gauge, and an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 44k miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 402ci L34 V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor as well as a chrome air cleaner lid and valve covers. Factory-rated output when new was 350 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.
The engine block stamping includes a CTW suffix, which aligns with the code for a 402ci L34 V8 with a four-barrel carburetor producing 350 horsepower for use with a three-speed automatic transmission.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with 3.31:1 gearing. The underside of the car was repainted gray, and the chassis components were refinished in black. The aftermarket dual exhaust system terminates with dual oval-shaped finishers beneath the rear bumper.
