This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS coupe is powered by a 396ci L78 V8 paired with a Muncie M22 four-speed manual transmission and a positraction differential and is finished in black over black and houndstooth upholstery. Equipment includes a white Super Sport stripe, simulated hood louvers, front and rear spoilers, 15″ Rally wheels, a Hurst shifter, console-mounted auxiliary gauges, and deluxe bucket seats. The car is said to have been refinished in 2012 before being acquired by the seller in Oregon in 2019 and relocated to Colorado. Service under current ownership has consisted of refurbishing the suspension. This Camaro SS is offered in Colorado with a Certificate of Authenticity from Jerry MacNeish, removed factory parts, service manuals, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory finished in British Green (ZZ) and was repainted in black in 2012 under previous ownership. Features include a white Super Sport front stripe, vacuum-operated headlight covers, simulated hood louvers, front and rear spoilers, chrome bumpers and rocker panel trim, a driver-side mirror, “Camaro SS” badging, and dual exhaust outlets. A ding is present in the passenger-side door and the side view mirror is cracked. Additional imperfections are shown up close in the gallery. A removed factory grille is included in the sale.
Silver 15″ Rally wheels wear chrome hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The suspension is said to have been refurbished in 2021 and fitted with replacement shocks, springs, and tie rods. RedHead steering gear has been installed. A removed factory master cylinder is included in the sale.
The cabin features deluxe front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl with houndstooth inserts joined by a matching dash pad, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include woodgrain trim on the center stack, a Premier AM/FM cassette stereo, a chrome Hurst shifter, a glove compartment, and black rubber floor mats. The dash pad is cracked. The seller notes that the driver-side door pin is loose and there is wind noise at speed.
The three-spoke steering frames a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for amperage, fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure are mounted in the center console. The five-digit mechanical odometer indicates 77k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. The steering wheel rim is cracked.
The L78 396ci Turbo-Jet V8 was factory-rated at 375 horsepower when new and is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and a chrome open-element air cleaner cover.
Engine stamping 344764 matches the last six digits of the VIN shown on the chassis plate. Suffix MQ, to the left, is consistent with that of a 1968 Camaro equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and a manual transmission.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie M22 four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with a 4.56:1 positraction differential. A dual-exhaust system is installed.
