This 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu has been restored as an SS396 clone. It is powered by a 396ci V8 built to L37 375-horsepower specs, although output has not been dyno tested. The engine is mated to a Muncie M20 four-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels through a 12-bolt Positraction rear axle. The car is finished in Marina Blue with a white top over a Bright Blue interior. Features include air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, bucket seats, and a center console. The seller purchased the car out of Alabama in 2014 and spent some $60k on the restoration, the receipts for which are included in the sale. This Chevelle is now offered with spare parts, a three-ring binder documenting the build, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Bodywork and paint were done by Bernt Karlsson and included replacing the rear quarter panels. A color change from Chevrolet Nantucket Blue (paint code D) to Marina Blue (F) was done using a DuPont two-stage process. The bumpers also were replaced and the trim pieces refurbished.
A white convertible top is equipped. Chevrolet SS Rally 14″ wheels feature new trim rings and center hubs. They are wrapped with BFGoodrich white-letter tires.
The interior was redone in Bright Blue with a kit from Legendary Auto Interiors and includes a matching boot cover and new GM lap belts. A Hurst shifter stirs the four-speed manual transmission, and the center console also includes a clock. Factory air conditioning is present, a feature that reportedly was not optioned on any of the 612 factory-built 1967 SS396/375 Chevelles.
A steering wheel with a rosewood rim fronts a dash with SS gauges including a blinker tachometer. A Retro Sound digital AM/FM/Bluetooth/USB head unit has been installed, with speakers located in the kick panels. Approximately 4k miles have been added by the seller, and the five-digit odometer now shows 17k miles but is believed to have rolled over once. True mileage is unknown.
The 396ci V8 is paired with a Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission, and drive is sent to the rear wheels via a 12-bolt Positraction rear end with 3.55:1 gearing. The engine has a 1968 casting number (3965440) and was built to L37 rather than L78 specs, with hydraulic rather than solid lifters. The radiator is a factory big-block unit, and the front suspension has been upgraded to F41 specs. A Holley 750cfm Ultra Double Pumper carburetor with an electric choke, a Powermaster Torque starter, and a FAST XDi HEI distributor were installed in September 2018, as was a new clutch, heater core, spark plugs, and hoses. An invoice for the work at Chimera Motors in Huntington Beach, California is presented in the photo gallery below.
The exhaust system features Sanderson ceramic headers and Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow mufflers. Additional pictures of the underside can be viewed in the gallery.
A three-ring binder documenting the restoration is included along with receipts for restoration work. Additional photos of the restoration process can be viewed in the gallery.
Also included with the sale are a factory SS steering wheel in Marina Blue, a Chevrolet AM radio, and other parts.
A start-up and walk-around video that includes drive-away footage is presented above.
