This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 coupe is powered by a 396ci V8 paired with a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. It was delivered new to Lyles Chevrolet in High Point, North Carolina, and was purchased by the seller out of Florida in 2001. A subsequent refurbishment completed in 2014 reportedly included body repairs, a repaint in red, and a rebuild of the engine. The car is equipped with a 12-bolt rear axle, bucket seats, a center console, a Delco radio, power-assisted front disc brakes, and 15″ steel wheels. This Chevelle SS is now offered in California with a 1966 Car Shipper copy, manufacturer’s literature, spare parts, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
This SS coupe was originally finished in Chateau Slate with a black vinyl roof, and it was repainted in red during the refurbishment completed in 2014 according to the seller, who notes rust remediation was performed at that time. Cosmetics specified with the SS396 package include a blacked-out grille, a unique SS396 hood with faux twin scoops, 396 badging on the front fenders, SS396 emblems on the grille and rear cove, Super Sport script on the rear quarter panels, and ribbed rocker-panel moldings. The seller notes the window seals are worn.
Painted 15″ Rally wheels wear bowtie-logo center caps and polished trim rings and are mounted with BFGoodrich white-letter tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted front disc brakes up front and drums at the rear.
Cabin finishes include vinyl upholstery over the bucket seats and rear bench, which are complemented with color-coordinated door panels and trim. The center console houses a clock positioned ahead of the shifter, and a Delco radio is retained within the center of the dashboard.
Instrumentation includes a horizontal 120-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit odometer reads 6k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.
The 396ci Turbo-Jet V8 was reportedly rebuilt in 2001 and features a painted Edelbrock intake manifold topped with a four-barrel carburetor. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear end. Per the seller, the vehicle’s fluids were serviced in 2021, and leaks are noted.
