This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS convertible was purchased new by the seller’s father from Chuck Ruwart Chevrolet in Denver, Colorado, and it has remained with the family in Colorado since. The car was refinished in blue with white stripes in the 1980s, and its 402ci V8 and three-speed automatic transmission were overhauled in 2020. Work involved installing a revised camshaft, rebuilding the cylinder heads, and replacing the timing chain, oil pump, and dual exhaust system. Equipment includes a white soft top, 15″ SS wheels, F41 suspension, front disc brakes, and a cowl induction hood in addition to a horseshoe-style shifter, air conditioning, front bucket seats trimmed in white vinyl, and an AM/FM stereo with an eight-track cassette player. This Chevelle SS convertible is now offered with a Protect-O-Plate, a copy of the build sheet, the owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, and a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory finished in Mulsanne Blue (26) with white stripes, and the seller notes that it was refinished in the 1980s. Tears in the white soft top are depicted in the gallery below. Equipment includes a cowl-induction hood, a black grille, a white top boot, hideaway windshield wipers, beltline molding, and chrome bumpers. A coordinated right-side mirror was installed in 2020, and a secondary horn plays “See the USA in your Chevrolet.”
The 15″ SS wheels are mounted with 15″ BFGoodrich tires. The car was optioned from the factory the F41 performance suspension and power-assisted front disc brakes. The power steering pump was rebuilt in 2020.
The front bucket and rear bench seats are upholstered in white vinyl, and interior appointments include a horseshoe-style shifter, a center console, power locks, air conditioning, and an AM/FM radio with an eight-track cassette player. The seller reports intermittent crackles and pops from the stereo system.
The tilting steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and an analog clock in addition to readouts for amperage, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 50k miles.
The LS3 402ci was overhauled in 2020 by Cars Remember When of Englewood, Colorado. The cylinder heads were rebuilt, a mild camshaft was fitted, and the battery, timing chain, dual exhaust system, main bearings, piston rings, rockers, pushrods, and lifters were replaced.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission, which was refreshed and fitted with replacement clutch packs in 2020.
