This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro coupe is said to have been delivered new to Bob Schmidt Chevrolet of Maumee, Ohio, and fitted with an overbored 427ci L72 V8 assembled by Booth-Arons Racing of Berkley, Michigan, in 1969. It was subsequently campaigned by the dealership in various NHRA Super Stock drag racing events from 1969 through 1973 before being sold to the second owner in 1974 and acquired by the seller’s father ten years later in 1984. The car wears Daytona Yellow paint along with an Endura front bumper, a cowl induction hood, and front and rear spoilers. On the inside, the seats are trimmed in black vinyl and accompanied by a Lakewood roll bar and a B&M shifter along with a Stahl & Associates tachometer and Auto Meter auxiliary gauges. Shifting is through a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission linked with a 12-bolt rear end with a 4.88:1 Positraction differential. Further equipment includes front disc brakes, Lakewood traction bars, and 15″ Cragar wheels. Work in 2021 involved an engine rebuild as well as repairing the exhaust system and refurbishing the braking system. This Camaro coupe is now offered with a 1974 invoice and sales flyer along with drag-strip timeslips and a clean New Jersey title in the name of the seller’s mother.
The car left the factory finished in Daytona Yellow and was painted in a red and white Schmidt Chevrolet livery when it raced in various drag racing events in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The livery was removed and the body was repainted in 1985, according to the seller. The car wears SS and 427 badging along with an Endura front bumper, a cowl induction hood, and front and rear spoilers. Further details include T3 headlamps, a driver-side mirror, and a chrome rear bumper.
The 15″ Cragar Super Sport wheels are mounted with Mickey Thompson S/S tires. The car is equipped with Lakewood traction bars, and braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. Work in 2021 is said to have involved refurbishing the braking system and wheel bearings.
The cabin houses front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in black vinyl, and woodgrain trim adorns the dash. A Lakewood roll bar has been added behind the front seats, while a B&M shifter sits to the right of the driver’s seat. A fire extinguisher is affixed to the central tunnel.
A two-spoke steering wheel with an SS center emblem fronts a column-mounted Stahl & Associates mechanical tachometer and Auto Meter shift light. A 120-mph speedometer is located to the left, and AutoMeter oil pressure and water temperature gauges are installed ahead of the factory fuel level gauge. A third AutoMeter gauge monitoring fuel pressure is mounted to the cowl vent outside the cabin. The five-digit odometer shows 2,300 miles, approximately 1,300 of which have been added under current ownership.
The car is said to have been fitted with an overbored 427ci L72 V8 assembled by Booth-Arons Racing following delivery to Bob Schmidt Chevrolet in December 1969. The engine breathes through a Holley carburetor atop an Edelbrock “Tarantula” TM2R intake manifold and is further equipped with four-into-one exhaust headers. The block was repaired and the rotating assembly was balanced as part of a rebuild performed in 2021 that also included installation of Wiseco forged pistons, Scat Enterprises forged I-beam connecting rods, COMP Cams roller lifters, Scorpion Racing roller rockers, and an Erson billet camshaft and valvetrain kit with solid roller springs and titanium retainers.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear end with a 4.88:1 Positraction differential. A 3800-RPM stall converter and aftermarket valve body are said to be installed, and a Moroso finned differential cover has been added out back. The dual exhaust system was repaired in 2021.
The chassis number is consistent with a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro coupe built at the Norwood, Ohio, assembly facility with a V8 engine. Decoding the Fisher body tag reveals the following information:
- Style 69 12437: 1969 Camaro Coupe
- Body NOR4194464: Norwood assembly number
- Trim 711: Black standard interior
- Paint 76: Daytona Yellow paint
- Build Date 12A: First week of December build date
An April 1974 invoice and sales flyer from Bob Schmidt Chevrolet are included in the sale along with photos of the car in various Schmidt Chevrolet liveries and a collection of drag-strip timeslips.
