This 1968 Chevrolet Impala convertible was first sold at Daniels Chevrolet of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and it is said to have been acquired by the seller’s father in 1989 and inherited by the seller in 2014. The car is refinished in red over white vinyl and is powered by a replacement 396ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes a white convertible top, Rally-style 15″ wheels, dual exhaust, power-assisted brakes, and a cassette stereo. The seats were reupholstered and the distributor and rear springs were replaced in preparation for the sale. This Impala convertible is now offered with a Protect-O-Plate, manufacturer’s literature, spare parts, and a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name.
The car was refinished in red under previous ownership and features a white convertible top. Features include black side moldings, quad headlights, Impala badging, a driver-side mirror, and a dual exhaust system. Paint chips around the car are shown in the gallery below.
Rally-style 15″ wheels wear trim rings and center caps in addition to Escort 3000 S/R thin-whitewall tires measuring 225/75. Braking is provided by power-assisted drums. The rear springs were replaced in May 2024.
The front and rear bench seats were reupholstered in white vinyl in 2024. Equipment includes a heater, a Jensen cassette stereo, and lap belts. The dashboard is cracked under the cover.
The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a horizontal 120-mph speedometer, a fuel level gauge and, an inoperative analog clock. A trio of Auto Gage auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage were mounted underneath the dash in May 2023. The five-digit odometer shows 4k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown. The seller states that the shift indicator is one gear off and the fuel gauge does not work.
The 396ci V8 is said to be a replacement installed in 1968. A Champion aluminum radiator is fitted. The #8 spark plug wire and additional wiring were replaced in 2023 along with the alternator, and the distributor is said to have been replaced in 2024.
The engine stamping is shown above. The “CE8” prefix is consistent with a factory replacement short block produced in 1968.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The transmission fluid was changed in March 2023.
The trim tag decodes as follows:
- 6B – Built during the second week of June
- 68-16467 – 1968 Impala two-door convertible
- JAN 311913 – Janesville, Wisconsin, assembly plant and sequence number
- 858 – Parchment vinyl upholstery
- R-1 – Matador Red paint w/white vinyl roof covering
The Protect-O-Plate is included in the sale and shows the original engine code included an IV suffix, which is appropriate for a 325-horsepower 396ci V8 installed in a 1968 Chevrolet passenger car with a TH400 automatic transmission.
