This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS coupe was sold new from Lou Awald Chevrolet of Kenmore, New York, in July 1968, and it is said to have been stored from 1970 through 1998, when it was refurbished by Camaro Specialties of East Aurora, New York. The car is powered by a 396ci L89 V8 linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a 4.56:1 Positraction differential, and it is finished in British Green over black vinyl. Equipment includes a center console, an AM radio, bucket seats, SS stripes and badging, front and rear spoilers, front disc brakes, and 14″ Rally wheels as well as an aluminum intake manifold and aluminum cylinder heads. The current owner acquired the car in 2019 and has since added approximately 200 miles. This Camaro SS is now offered on dealer consignment in California with its Protect-O-Plate, a copy of the window sticker, and a transferable New York registration document.
The body was finished from the factory in British Green, and it was repainted during the late-90s refurbishment at Camaro Specialties. Features include an SS-style hood with raised simulated air intakes, a driver-side mirror, SS badging, front and rear spoilers, and chrome bumpers.
The 14″ Rally wheels are mounted with reproduction F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports redline tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in black vinyl along with coordinated carpets and door panels as well as woodgrain trim on the center console. Interior appointments include a Muncie shifter, an AM radio, a heater, and lap belts.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and an analog clock, while auxiliary gauges for voltage, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure are mounted to the center console. The five-digit odometer shows 12k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.
The 396ci V8 was factory equipped with an aluminum intake manifold, a Holley four-barrel carburetor, and aluminum cylinder heads for a rating of 375 horsepower when new. The engine was rebuilt in 1997, at which time it was bored .030″ over and fitted with a COMP Cams camshaft.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear end with an optional 4.56:1 Positraction differential.
The warranty booklet indicates the car was sold new from Lou Awald Chevrolet of Kenmore, New York, in July 1968, and the attached Protect-O-Plate is stamped with the engine suffix code MT. The BW rear axle code indicates a 12-bolt axle with a 4.56:1 Positraction differential, and the ZZ color code indicates the car was originally finished in British Green.
The car does not have a title, as it was last registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being offered on its transferable New York registration.
